Tigers of the Week – Robotics Team

Congratulations to Kamryn Brecht, Emily Redekopp, Olivia Walsh, Paige Jurek, and Erin Smith – Robotics – on being selected as the TIGERs of the Week.

Kamryn is always willing to help out wherever she is asked to help get our robot built. From painting to reaming, she has been willing to pitch in. Whenever we are turning wrenches, you will likely find her with a wrench in her pocket ready to help out.

Emily was a new addition to our team this year and has been willing to help out the team wherever needed. She has shown pride in her work and our team has tremendous gratitude towards her help and willingness to work the long hours to get our robot built.

Oivia has worked tirelessly to get the website up and running. Working independently is a strength for Olivia. She has shown creativity and tenacity while working with our website.

Paige is often given tasks to work on independently. While working on these, she does not give half an effort. She is a conscientious worker that takes pride in her work and is someone we can depend on to finish projects.

Erin has worked on many marketing projects for our team and has shown an incredible ability to complete the multiple tasks given to her. Whenever she completes a project, she is willing to have others critique her work and takes all suggestions professionally.

Tigers of the Week – Christian Kurth & Joey Mueller

Christian Kurth – Wrestling

In our section team competitions this week, Christian won all three of his matches by fall. Including a thrilling pin of very tough Watertown opponent which allowed for the team to make some needed adjustments to pull out the one point victory for the team. In the finals of the team sections, Christian pinned the number four ranked kid in the state at his weight class.


Joey Mueller – Boys Basketball

He scored a team high 18 points in a win on the against Mound-Westonka. Joey has demonstrated a great work ethic thus far. He is committed to his teammates and does what he needs to do to help the team. Joey also leads by example on and off the floor.

May I Read Something To You?

What is free, low technology, hugely important, and fun to do with people of all ages?  The answer is read aloud.  I was fortunate while growing up with four siblings to belong to a family that read.  We were read to before bed, on Sundays during Advent, on summer evenings at our cabin in Wisconsin, and countless times in between.  There was a seamless flow from being read to by both parents to becoming a reader myself.

A few of the books I loved that were read to me include, The Mailman of Bayberry Lane, Charlotte’s Web, The Boxcar Children, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, Treasure Island, and The Call of the Wild. I am certainly not alone in valuing read aloud time. Jacqueline Kennedy said once, “There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world.  Love of books is the best of all.”

Another quote to support reading aloud is from Katherine Patterson author of Bridge to Terabithia,  “It is not enough to simply teach children to read, we have to give them something worth reading.  Something that will stretch their imaginations-something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out towards people whose lives are quite different from their own.”

All of our lives are different, unique, and busy.  Time spent with our children is often filled with distractions.  So in case you don’t see reading aloud to your family, children, or grandchildren fitting into your lives here is a list of ten reasons to read aloud in your home, to your family, and in school to your students.

10.  “Reading of good books is like conversation with the finest men (people) of the past centuries.”  Descartes

9.  In case you weren’t read to as a child or even if you were, you can begin or continue a rich tradition.  My 92 year old mother remembers having a teacher read Jo’s Boys to her in school.

8.  You may get to know librarians in the Public Library or school media centers that are friendly and hold a wealth of recommendations for good read aloud books.

7.  Reading aloud to children increases their vocabularies because a person’s listening level is higher than their reading level.

6.  It will enlarge a child’s world and quite likely yours as well.

5.  Reading aloud offers strong support for school success.

4.  You become a positive role model for learning.

3.  Reading aloud might help you keep up with what young people are reading.

2.  Reading aloud promotes physical closeness.

 1.  It is free and easy.

If you are still not convinced then I challenge you to try it.  My advice is to start with a short read; think The Mailman of Bayberry Lane rather than Treasure Island.

Ask your children or grandchildren about their favorite book or what a teacher is currently reading to them in school.  Read this column to your older children and ask for their thoughts.  How to begin?

Just try, “May I read something to you?”

School, is it worth it?

The video you are about to see is a result of a series of meetings between Hutchinson, Lester Prairie, Glencoe-Silver Lake Schools, Mcleod County Social Services, McLeod County Attorney’s office, and PACT for Families Collaborative which received a grant from the Bush Foundation to affect truancy in the county.

Students from the above districts went into the schools and asked the question: “School, is it worth it?” along with some fun and silly questions. Here is the result.

Tigers of the Week – Erica Ellefson and Brandon Rezac

Congratulations to Erica Ellefson and Brandon Rezac, this week’s TIGERs of the Week:

Erica Ellefson – Girls Basketball

Erica has tremendous pride in her defense.  Her hustle and physicality make her one of the top post defenders in the state.  Erica never complains to the officials, coaches, or her teammates.  Erica is grateful for the teammates she has and plays for them.  Her effort is unquestionable.  She often sacrifices by setting up other girls with set screens, block outs, and tip balls.  Erica is very aware of the talent she plays against every night.  She will be the first to tell them when they make a nice play against her.


Brandon Rezac – Swim and Dive

Brandon swam his season best times in all of his races at the WCC Championship meet.  His performance helped the team solidify their second consecutive conference title.  Brandon has worked hard all season to improve his technique and conditioning.  He has done so without complaint.  He is always looking for ways to improve.  Brandon understands that without his teammates, he would not be as fast as he is today.  He has always shown great respect for his coaches, teammates, competitors, and the officials.


In addition to their accomplishments in athletics, both Erica and Brandon were a part of the Math League team that finished second in their regional meet last week.

Why? TigerPath Academies

For the past one hundred years, a traditional high school student has pretty much been given the choice to take academic classes that “prepare” you for college education, or the chance to take vocational courses that prepare you for workforce or perhaps a 2-year degree. The Smith-Hughes Act of 1917 was passed to give students vocational courses for those who were not pursuing college degrees.

As factory life emerged for the American worker in the early 1900’s, an alternative to farm work became America’s new version of “high school”, a system that sorted learners into college or work preparation. One hundred years have passed, yet a stigma still exists that those hands-on learning opportunities are regarded as something lesser than traditional classroom courses. This has been a most unfortunate message for the American student. In fact, the type of student most disserviced by this approach are students that ultimately do not get any, or many, opportunities to expand their skill set in hands-on courses—the 4 year college student.

Hands-on learning has always been understood as an excellent means to teach someone to learn the deep connections to subject matter that produce long-term understanding. The ability to generalize learning to non-predictable situations is the hallmark of a well-educated individual. Unfortunately, most of this practical reasoning ability is done outside the confines of a formal education. Rather, most people rely on the deeply personal experience of being mentored by someone who has valuable skills…usually outside of the school environment.  

High school classroom experiences are not highly predictive of future workplace success. Just being good at Mathematics is not necessarily good enough for the effective engineering student. Just being good at Science is not necessarily enough for the nursing student. Ultimately, there are major hands-on skills that need to be coupled with excellent classroom experiences to create the ultimate workforce readiness. This applies to occupations across the entire workforce spectrum. Ultimately, the ability to relate and collaborate with others, to solve problems, to think critically and to create in our economy have never been more valuable than today. In fact, these skills are nearly essential to the continued edge that the American economy has held for so long.  

Over the past four years, Hutchinson High School has been working to build career “academies” that integrate career pathways into all curricular areas. We have been working on balancing this premise by offering hands-on opportunities for all students. This initiative is called TigerPath Academies ( I invite you to check out this website to learn about the multiple “cool” elements that these academies bring to our school and community!

As part of this, we screened eight years’ worth of recent graduates to find out where their post-high school experiences led them. We divided their occupations into four large, workplace sectors that include STREAM (manufacturing/technical); Sci HI (healthcare/science); Business and Human Services. Each of these sectors employs between 20% and 30% of the workforce, so these are pertinent to our students as any predictor could be.

It is important that we begin by offering choice to students at a much earlier age. Through choice, you also must elect. It is part of the development process that is essential for students to learn responsibility to themselves. By promoting this choice, we absolutely expect to increase the relevance of the high school experience for our students! Whereas you leave high school to “major” in a degree, or to pursue a vocation, TigerPath is more like picking up a “minor” to help you make that choice better.

We do this through multiple mechanisms. The icing on the cake is the connections we’ve developed by working with the Hutchinson community. The interactions with our community and workforce regarding TigerPath are much stronger than even seemed fathomable two years ago. We believe that TigerPath Academies will increase the effectiveness of our school, and beyond that, make our community and workforce more viable for the future!

Tigers of the Week – Dasin Mateski & Tori Wortz

Congratulations to this week’s TIGERs of the Week:

Dasin Matesky – Wrestling

Dasin has put together an excellent season with a 28-7 regular season record. He has been an instrumental part of the teams success this year by demonstrating extreme tenacity and responsibility. He has been an excellent teammate and role model for our wrestling team. Last week he had two big wins in our dual matches against United and Watertown/Mayer/Mayer Lutheran and then wrapped up the week by winning the Purple Pride Invitational tournament. His weight class in the tournament included three wrestlers that were in the state tournament last year. Dasin pinned his opponent in the finals.

Tori Wortz – Girls Basketball

Tori has lead the Tigers in scoring and steals the entire year. Tori’s determination to attack the basket against the other team’s best defender and then turn around and play outstanding pressure defense is a model for our program. While playing as hard as she does, Tori never complains to officials, coaches, or teammates. Tori needs no encouragement when it comes to effort. Tori will never be out-worked. This trait is one way she leads our team as other players look to match her effort level. Tori is quick to point out the attributes of her competitors. She approaches each game knowing that others have also put in the time and she will need to bring her best effort to have success.

Tigers of the Week – Ava Broten and Chandler Kurth

Ava Broten – Girls Hockey
Ava scored two goals during our home game against Willmar on just her second game back on the varsity roster after suffering a broken ankle and undergoing surgery early in the season. Ava has kept a positive attitude and appreciates the chance to be able to play again. She is always working hard and has made it obvious to her coaches and team that she’s willing to put in the extra work to get back to 100% before the season is over. Her hustle and hard work has earned her the respect of any athlete and coach who knows how difficult it is to come back after a long absence.

Chandler Kurth – Wrestling
Chandler was able to settle a score with a ranked opponent that beat him just one week early. In the finals of the Hutchinson Wrestling Invitational, Chandler faced the #4 ranked wrestler in the state at 195 pounds from Foley and won the championship. Chandler was one of four champions for the tigers and helped the team to a 2nd place finish in the tournament that boasted four teams that are ranked.
